The house where Churchill fell in love at first sight

Just over 30 minutes southeast from London's Charing Cross Station on the National Rail. Chartwell House is a 15 minute drive from Sevenoaks Station. Even though it was the morning of a weekday, many tourists had already visited, perhaps because it was a pleasantly sunny day. This mansion was purchased by Winston Churchill (1874-1965) in 1922 and was his final residence until his later years. It has been open to the public under the care of the National Trust since 1966, the year after Churchill's death. Without a fixed home until the age of 48, Churchill moved from place to place like a rootless plant. . Before buying Chartwell House, he lived experimentally near Lingfield in the South of England, but was unsatisfied with it. When he encountered Chartwell House in 1921, it was an old, ivy-covered Victorian building, and the view from there was utterly captivating. The following year, in the autumn of 1922, he purchased the estate and house for £5,000. After the purchase, he asked architect Philip Tilden, who designed the house of British politician Lloyd George, to expand and modernize the house. The renovation took time, and it wasn't until 1924, two years later, that the Churchills were able to move out.
